Full Review:

Daxter, the sidekick of Jak, now has his own game and this time he's the one saving people… from bugs. Daxter ends up in a town and meets an old man with pointy ears and the man gets Daxter to help him run his company, which exterminates bugs. Daxter agrees and is given a bug swatter. He ends up having to save Jak. The first job for Daxter is to exterminate the bugs at a hotel.

The gameplay is a mix between platforming and fighting. This consists of you completing missions and getting new ones in a free-roam world. Even though there is only one new mission at a time, the game offers a free roam city in which you can go back to previous missions. You collect two different collectables, one when you kill an enemy, metal bug gem, and another kind, which you collect by finding and using platforming skills, the precursor orbs. It is not required to collect all of the gems in every level, because the levels consist of performing certain tasks, not just collecting.

The platforming is very good and fun, although not very challenging. A bug sprayer becomes available soon after the start of the game, which stuns the enemies. The sprayer gets upgrades such as the jet pack which can help you hover and fly through the air for a limited amount of time. Green orbs placed on the maps refills your bug spray, but it also helps you hover longer, helping you reach more of the red precursor orbs. There are also things like torches, which throw you in the air when you fly over it. All these obstacles and challenges make the plat forming fun and sometimes difficult for those who want to collect all the red gems in the levels.

Collecting the red orbs unlocks new 'dream sequences'. These 'dream sequences' are Daxter's dreams of being heroes like Neo in the Matrix and Braveheart. The 'dream sequences' are timed button presses to kill enemies coming towards you. By completing the dream sequences more health can be added or Daxter can learn a new move. The 'dream sequences' entice the player to try to collect all the red orbs in each level because. It makes collecting them both rewarding and fun.

The fighting in Daxter is where you get the other type of collectable, the yellow gem. There are many different types of bugs and Daxter is equipped with a bug swatter at the beginning to handle these. He also gets a bug sprayer which stuns the enemies and makes them immobile, helping Daxter defeat them. Even though Daxter swings the bug swatter with the press of the square button, fighting never gets old with the bug sprayer and the moves he learns. He also gets a flamethrower in which he can burn bugs and hover higher.

There are also bosses that require you to learn the sequence of their movements to defeat them. They are fun, even though not the most challenging. To mix it up, the game has vehicle missions and a hovering scoter that you can ride. Even though this addition isn't something very different, it does offer variety to the gameplay and the scoter allows you to reach places in the free-roam world, otherwise unreachable.

Daxter does have a few bad qualities about it, and one of them is the camera. You can move the camera with the L and R buttons, but that is very slow. The camera sometimes does weird things while you are playing, but overall it is good and does not interfere with fighting or platforming. But the flaws are overshadowed by graphics, which are some of the best on the PSP. During the cut scenes, you can even see the hairs of Daxter's fur. The graphics are colorful and very crisp.

Daxter has a multiplayer feature called Bug Combat in which you can pit your bugs against the computer or a real life person in a game that's based on rock-paper-scissors style gameplay. While playing the actual single player game of Daxter, you can collect bugs, tokens, and upgrades that you can use during Bug Combat. During Bug Combat, you can pick your tokens and play them during gameplay, which puts a more strategic spin on the game. The bug combat is not a very fun addition to the game, but it does offer a multiplayer option and a way to collect more things during gameplay. It would have been better if they would have made it so you can actually fight in real time with the bugs.

Daxter's sound is decent for a PSP title, and the cut scenes are enjoyable to watch and sometimes funny, although Daxter gets a little annoying. The controls are responsive and easy to learn and master. Even though the PSP has only one analogue stick, it's not a problem.

I had a hard time putting this game down, because it is so fun, and once you beat it you can go back and try to collect all of the gems and orbs and bugs. The Replay Value is very good.

This is one of the best games on the PSP, even if you don't like the genre you should pick it up because it's the few and the proud on the PSP.
